Ocean Road Tree Services are your local experts for safe, efficient, and thorough yucca and palm tree removal across Torquay, the wider Surf Coast, and parts of Greater Geelong including Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads.
While yuccas and palms can add a unique aesthetic, they can quickly become problematic, requiring professional intervention.

Why Remove Yuccas and Palm Trees?

Many property owners choose to remove these plants for various reasons:

  • Invasive Growth: Yucca plants, in particular, are notorious for their aggressive and extensive root systems. They spread rapidly, producing “pups” or offsets that can quickly overtake garden beds, lawns, and even threaten foundations or underground pipes.
  • Safety Hazards: Both yuccas and palms can develop sharp fronds or spiky leaves that pose a direct injury risk to people and pets. Overgrown or decaying palms can also drop heavy fronds or coconuts, creating a significant hazard.
  • Aesthetic Improvement: Unwanted or overgrown yuccas and palms can detract from your garden’s design, block views, or simply look out of place. Removing them can instantly enhance your property’s visual appeal and create more usable space.
  • Pest Infestation: Dense growth or decaying stumps can become attractive breeding grounds for pests like termites, ants, and other insects, potentially leading to infestations in your home or other plants.
  • Compromised Landscaping: Their extensive root systems can compete with other plants for vital nutrients and water, hindering the growth and health of your desired landscaping.

The Challenges of Yucca & Palm Tree Removal

Attempting to remove large yuccas or palm trees yourself can be a daunting and often dangerous task:

  • Deep & Extensive Roots: Yucca roots can extend several metres horizontally and taproots can go incredibly deep (up to 30 feet for some species!), making manual removal extremely difficult and often ineffective in preventing regrowth. Palm roots are also dense and fibrous, requiring specialised tools.
  • Heavy & Awkward Trunks: Palm trunks are often smooth, heavy, and difficult to grip, posing a challenge for safe removal, especially in confined spaces or near structures.
  • Sharp Foliage: Both plants possess sharp leaves and spines that can cause serious injury without proper protective gear and handling techniques.
  • Regrowth: Even after cutting down the visible plant, both yuccas and palms have a strong tendency to regrow from remaining root fragments or the stump itself. This requires a thorough approach to ensure permanent removal.

FAQs

Can I keep the wood and the mulch?

If you want to keep the large rounds of wood for a fireplace. We can stack it to 1 foot size rounds at the base of the tree. Doing this will reduce the price. If you want the mulch, we can leave it in a location where we can dump it. Leaving the mulch does not change the price.

The Surf Coast Planning Scheme protects vegetation under various controls and overlays. A planning permit is generally required for:

  1. Removing any native vegetation from properties larger than 4000m2
  2. Removing vegetation within an Environmental Significance Overlay
  3. Removing vegetation specified in schedules under Significant Landscape or Vegetation Protection Overlays
  4. Removing vegetation within a Salinity Management Overlay
  5. Removing certain trees specified in schedules under the Heritage Overlay

It’s important to note that multiple controls may apply to your property, and there are often exemptions that could be relevant to your situation.

Before proceeding with any vegetation removal or trimming, it’s recommended that you:

  1. Use the online mapping tool to identify the planning overlays applicable to your property
  2. Review the permit and application requirements for each relevant overlay
  3. Contact the Surf Coast Council if you’re unsure about your specific situation

For more information or to discuss your particular case, you can contact the Surf Coast Council:
